We have a number of Team Leader roles available across various locations and technical areas. You will be a positive role model to lead and maintain the capability of one of these teams:
Knowledge Information Services (Porton Down)
We’re responsible for providing the organisation, and business collaboration partners, with appropriately controlled access to Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS). This includes access to necessary information, data exchange, communications, knowledge management and specialist advice.
You will lead team members who deliver strategic and technical direction for Information Systems Architecture, Information Assurance and Management, and Architectural Governance across Dstl. The team also provides support and maintenance capability for highly classified networks.
Explosives Analysis Group, Identity Intelligence (Porton Down)
We support and advise MOD and wider Government on the detection, identification and characterisation of explosives substances and related materials. We conduct research & development into the use of equipment and animals to support a search capability for UK Forces and Other Government Departments. We deliver sovereign explosives, forensic and intelligence capabilities provide front-line scientific capability and experienced advice and intelligence-led support to disrupt the network.
The following skills would be highly desirable for this role;
- Knowledge of forensics and biometrics
- DNA examination and/or Latent fingerprint recovery experience
- Experience of collaborating with the police and/or international partners
- Experience of leading a multi-disciplinary team
Defence and Security Analysis Land Environment Group (Portsdown West)
We deliver analytical studies to support Army and MoD decision-making on future technology, fighting vehicles, soldier systems, artillery and military engineering.
You'll lead one of four teams;
Land Capability Analysis Team (LCAT)
We provide land combat expertise and pan-Land Environment operational analysis studies on the Future Force Development and current Army.
Close Combat Team (CCT)
Our analysis focuses on Dismounted and Mounted Close Combat. This covers dismounted soldier systems including body armour and PPE, weapons, C2 and the adversary threat, mounted research, land autonomy and conceptual land force development.
Combat Support Team (CST)
We focus on Military Engineering and Indirect Fires capabilities including Technical Demonstrator Projects, obstacle breaching, advanced materials research and indirect fire weapon platforms, systems integration, munitions studies and conceptual studies.
Operation Support Team (OST)
We are the primary capability development and delivery mechanism for MOD deployable scientists for Support to Operations including a 24/7 Reach back capability that provides advice direct to Operations both within the UK and overseas.
Policy Analysis Team (Portsdown West)
The Policy Analysis team delivers work in order to support MOD with the majority of work through the Policy & Capability Enterprise Support (PCES) and Missile Defence & Security Systems (MDSS) programmes. We are responsible for Analysis support to Security Policy and Deterrence, Defence Challenge Function and Wargaming.
Air and Maritime (Portsdown West)
We provide impartial and objective analysis to support decision-making, primarily in Air and Navy Commands. The team conducts analysis of force structures and coherence at the component level, force generation, policy impact assessments, scenario analysis along with threat characterisations and cost analysis.
Cyber and Information Systems Division
Information Assurance and Security (Porton Down)
Our work focuses on information security, its policies and technologies and provide direct consultancy to other parts of MOD (often during procurement).
We contribute to working groups & helping define policy with both GCHQ and NATO and working on Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) funded programmes – some of which also support international collaboration.
Cyber Defence Technology (Porton Down)
We deliver research and advice focused on technologies to defend MOD systems from ever evolving cyber attack. Our work ranges from low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) concept development in the context of defending future systems, through to high TRL technology assessment to improve defence of vulnerable legacy systems.
Electronic Warfare Systems and Enterprise Teams (Porton Down)
Our teams deliver detailed technical expertise through to wider systems and enterprise level work. We provide a spectrum of project support activities that covers close working with Defence Equipment & Support and involves helping to define requirements for new systems on a range of platforms and assessment of equipment for in-service acceptance.
Ideally you should have some awareness of Electronic Warfare and wider defence in respect of key platforms and systems but not essential as full training is provided.
Intelligent Data Systems, Data Science and AI Research (Porton Down)
Our teams supports MoD through the effective use of data, information and intelligence. You will play a key leadership role in the Group and help enable Defence to turn data into information advantage through the application of the following capabilities:
- Data Science (including text analytics, geospatial and temporal analysis, imagery analysis, correlation and information fusion)
- Signal and Data Processing
- Intelligence Systems Engineering
- Cyber Situational Awareness
- Artificial Intelligence
You will support your team apply a range of information science and machine intelligence skills on real problems and real data to make a real difference. You will work across Dstl, the UK MOD and Security Agencies, UK Government, industry and academia (including the Alan Turing Institute) as well as with international partners.
Radar Applied Research (Porton Down)
Your team will develop the next generation of radar sensing. Prior experience of radar systems is not necessary as a training package will be provided on starting. A science background and leadership skills are key.
Electro-Optic Systems (Porton Down)
We deliver electro-optic science and technology and frontline advice. The role will be responsible for developing the team's expertise and networks with academia and industry. We'll train you in electro-optics if this isn't your background.
Space Missions Team (Portsdown West)
Our team work across the following:
- Small satellite design principals, engineering and experimentation
- Constellation design, & military utility assessment
- Knowledge of payloads, sensors and capabilities
- Knowledge of spacecraft standards
- Working with space suppliers to provide training and expertise
- Technical advice and decision support
This team is one of three teams in the newly created Space Group. Although it has been formed from existing space teams, you will shape its identity, working closely with existing Space Team Leaders to support the space programme.
Vulnerabilities Team (Porton Down)
We are Dstl’s centre of gravity in the field of embedded systems and vulnerability research and you will help to further establish the group as being the first port of call across government in offering the right skills, expertise and necessary tooling to find and fully understand vulnerabilities in advanced embedded devices. Our skills include:
- RF Technologies;
- Protocols;
- Electronics;
- Embedded Software;
- Software/Hardware Development;
- Reverse Engineering.
Cyber Systems (Porton Down)
We are a team of cyber systems and technology experts that use the mind-set of an aggressor to characterise and assess our military systems for the purposes of finding Cyber Vulnerabilities. You'll have responsibility for maintaining and developing Dstl's contribution to the National Cyber Strategy. Working closely with the programme team, customer partners, academia and industry to ensure that Dstl has access to the very best advice. Experience in cyber security and systems engineering is preferred.
Intelligence Innovation Team (RAF Wyton)
You'll be leading a team of scientists, engineers and technologists embedded within Defence Intelligence at RAF Wyton. You'll work day-to-day with other Dstl and MOD employees, colleagues from industry & academia, and representatives of partner nations, in a unique environment to lead the delivery of innovative solutions to assist intelligence analysts in their work. You will be given the freedom to think and innovate; working with like-minded colleagues passionate about delivering high quality technical solutions in a friendly and supportive environment. The team draws on the breadth of research conducted across Dstl with a particular focus on Data Science, Image Processing (including Electro-optical and Radar) and Operational Analysis. Project Management experience would be desirable.
