Role Overview

The purpose of the post is
  1. to provide the radiochemistry analysis service to the Rosyth site to ensure compliance with the authorisations and registrations granted under the Radioactive Substances Act (RSA)
  2. to support Nuclear Operations and other external customers/stakeholders and maintain continued competence in the areas of sample preparation and radiochemical assay of a range of samples

Key Responsibilities

The post holder is responsible:
  1. for the day to day outputs of the Radiochemistry section in respect of radiochemical analysis of radioactive wastes, environmental samples and radiological clearance samples
  2. for operating and maintaining a quality management system and radiochemical testing methods that are accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS)

Technical Competence:

Provide a competent and effective radiochemistry analytical service to the Rosyth site and to external customers.

Provide the intelligent customer capability for all stakeholder interactions relating to radiochemistry analysis and interpretation of results.

Provide robust and traceable radiochemical assay data for the radioactive waste disposal declarations made to SEPA

Provide appropriate industry liaison with others in the Radiochemistry profession both within and outside of the Babcock group

Appointed as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) in accordance with the requirements of IRR99 to oversee the work with radioactive materials within the Radiochemistry Laboratory area and to ensure that Local Rules are followed.

Desired Level of Qualification:

Degree in a relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent membership of a relevant professional body.
Experience of chemical analysis in a laboratory environment.
Nuclear Dockyard Radiochemistry Course (NDRC), Nuclear Chemistry Course (NCC) or equivalent preferred.
Babcock Radiation Protection Supervisor Training Course.

Management:

Liaising with customers to ensure their requirements are met using the most appropriate and cost effective methods.

Desired Level of Qualification:

Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
Effective planning, organisational and analytical skills
Effective administrative and communication skills

Leadership:

Act with honesty and integrity, and promote continuous improvement in standards of radiation safety, conventional safety and environmental safety.

Business:

Maintain good business relationships with internal customers, Ministry of Defence and other external customers. Understand and respond to customer needs and challenge business activities from a customer perspective.

Maintain good professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Understand and respond to external stakeholder needs.

Security
Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.
The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.

Based at Rosyth Business Park on the Firth of Forth at Rosyth, which is 3 miles south of Dunfermline. Rosyth is less than 15 miles from Edinburgh.
