Job Details

As a Magazine Worker you will work within Dstl’s new cutting edge Energetics Enclosure. You'll work closely with the magazine mangers to safely and correctly receive, store and issue ammunition and explosive articles.

We are looking for someone who has:
All roles

• Proven track record of effective team working.
• The ability to prioritise effectively.
• Ability to work and communicate well with a range of stakeholders.
• Is comfortable working outside in all weathers (we will provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing).
• The ability to produce, update and maintain records and documentation.


Level 3
• Previous experience of working with Explosive, Munition and Energetic Material holdings.
• The ability to supervise others

In this role you will:
• Ensure you understand and comply with all administration, safety and security procedures to ensure the correct receipt, storage, issue and movement of ammunition and explosives.
• Ensure tasks are completed to the time and quality agreed with management through supervising colleagues and other workers.
• Maintain facilities as assigned or required.
• Carry out loading and unloading of vehicles, using appropriate equipment including fork lift truck, to move, lift, transfer and position energetic materials in the correct locations. Supervise and operate plant and other machinery, ensuring correct use and compliance with safety procedures.
• Raise or resolve technical issues promptly understanding when to raise an issue to a higher authority.
• Identify, communicate and implement improvements to processes and procedures.
• Keep stakeholders and teams informed of progress with tasks using the appropriate format.
• Identify and suggest improvements to processes and procedures.
• Ensure data and facilities are maintained to the quality and level of security required.

Challenges
• Working within a busy facility meeting the demands of a range of on and off-site customers.
• Communicating effectively with site management, customers, teams and visitors.
• Working outside in all weathers.
• Maintaining a clean, safe and secure working area.
• Requirement to physically move items into storage in accordance with Manual Handling practices (suitable workplace adjustments can be investigated and provided).

• Ensure explosives and ammunition are stored and moved in line with the safety procedures and regulations.

• Ensure accurate records are produced and maintained.
• Planning work to ensure it meets timeframes and standard of quality.
• Support and carry out stock checks in accordance with agreed schedules.
• The appropriate stakeholders are kept informed and updated accordingly.
• The work area is clean, tidy and secure.
• Will suspend work if required.
• Flexibility is required to cover early and late site use requirements as required.
• Training will be given to ensure continued professional development within the role.

Level 3
• Colleagues are tasked appropriately in accordance with their abilities.

Working conditions
You will be required to work outside in all weathers as necessary; there is a requirement for manual handling and physical labour. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided and must be worn, (items include but are not limited to safety boots, gloves, overalls and other equipment). Work will be carried out within magazines and process facilities, touch down desks are available for essential computer application work.
Once fully trained and competent there may be the opportunity to support work outside of Dstl’s standard working hours and off site. This may include nights and weekends. People who volunteer to go on-call and / or support off-site will be rewarded in accordance with the Dstl Allowances.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
Essential
All roles

• Able to competently use IT and MS Office programmes.
• Ability to produce and maintain accurate records.
• Hold a full UK licence to allow driving of range vehicles (minimum car).
• Able to use communication equipment e.g. short band radio.

Level 3
• Explosive Movement Awareness trained.
• Working knowledge of safety processes relating to storage and movement of energetic materials detailed as within the MOD explosive Regulations.
• Previous experience of supervising teams and individuals.
• Ability to effectively supervise individuals/ teams and manage working area.
• Experience of managing magazine holdings and working with energetics.
• Experience of identifying potential or actual issues with the environment, equipment and processes.

These roles require full UK Security Clearance and if successful you will be expected to obtain Developed Vetting clearance within 12 months of taking up the post. Applications from Dual Nationals cannot be accepted.
