We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Buyer working within Defence Systems Technology (DST), Bristol.

DST is a business unit within the Marine Sector of Babcock International Group. Working on a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects, DST works with a number of key clients domestically and internationally. We're based at a number of sites in the UK and overseas. To provide support to the Babcock Marine Supply Chain within their capability and/or level of experience complying with corporate, and regulatory and legislative requirements.

The provision of Goods and/or Services for the Company at the best total acquisition cost, consistent with the specified technical, quality assurance and delivery requirements. Timely, high quality, best value bought-out finished supplies, raw materials, and services are critical to the success of this business.
Senior Buyers represent the Company commercially to their specified level of commercial and financial delegation.

Principal Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Ensuring all Contracts within the individual's authority meet the Babcock International Group Commercial, Health and Safety policies and procedures and are compliant within the legal entity that they are being placed.
  • Ensuring appropriate Contract Terms and Conditions are applied to all Contracts (including Sub-Contract and Purchase Orders) placed. This shall include the consideration, negotiation and agreement of Terms and Conditions with suppliers, within the individual's authorised commercial and financial delegation.
  • Managing and executing the processing and placement of Contracts in sufficient time to reliably meet the required delivery date, ensuring that the best total acquisition cost is achieved, consistent with the specified technical, quality assurance and delivery requirements. It is recognised that requirements may be identified by the Business teams at short notice or outside agreed lead times or Supply Contract agreements. Where this is the case the Senior Buyer and their team is expected to endeavour to meet the needs of the business whilst ensuring that all corporate, regulatory and legislative requirements are complied with.
  • Undertaking the planning and management of procurement support to the Business, including the development of contracting and supplier engagement strategies. This will typically include the management of a team of supply chain personnel.
  • Participating or leading Category Management, Supplier Relationship Management or Capability Development initiatives, supporting the development of the Company's Supply Chain and Procurement strategy in line with Corporate or Business Unit objectives.
  • Analysing procurement spends and seeking to introduce the most reliable cost effective procurement route to suit each circumstance or group of circumstances. This shall include the consideration of innovative contracting approaches where appropriate, delivering realisable benefit to the business at an acceptable level of risk.
  • Managing and executing the processing of requests from the Business representatives in line with any demand plan produced as a result of integrated business planning, cascading as appropriate. Sourcing suitable suppliers. Instructing, leading and preparing the issue of invitations to tender/request for quotations, proactively ensuring they are responded to in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the performance of suppliers relevant to their scope of support or as directed by the appropriate manager ensuring Contract terms are monitored and performance is communicated to suppliers as necessary to ensure continued or improved performance levels are achieved, as part of the continuous improvement of vendors.
  • Undertake staff management activities including appraisals, coaching/development, initiating training, report writing and monitoring benefits arising.


  • The Senior Buyer is accountable to the Principal Buyer or appropriate responsible Supply Chain or Procurement manager.
  • For the principal tasks and responsibilities identified to be carried out and discharged effectively, there are a number of limited responsibilities of other groups or persons that must also be discharged. Principal amongst these are:
  • To interface generally with all levels of management within the Company, suppliers and other interested parties in support of their responsibilities. Regular interfaces to include, but not limited to the following: - Internal: Babcock International Group Colleagues, Line and Business Unit Senior Management and Directors.
    - External: Supplier / Customer Representatives up to Director Level.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A recognised degree qualification or equivalent is preferred.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body, for example the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply at a Level 5 or above is preferred.
  • The Senior Buyer should have an appropriate level of knowledge in supply chain and procurement of goods/services.
  • They must demonstrate a sound knowledge and application of good commercial business practice.
  • A proven track record of effective people management and interpersonal skills.
  • A Senior Buyer must demonstrate a willingness to work in different areas of the business as part of a condition of the role.

This role will be based at Bristol Business Park.

Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.
