The Role

On offer is a Bid Estimator and Proposal Manufacturing Engineer career opportunity within a company considered a world-leader in the integration of cutting-edge defence and security systems, delivering decisive advantage to military, government and civil customers worldwide. This Role Is offered on a Permanent basis.

Working with the Head of Production & Delivery to support new bid packages you will act as bid liaison for Production between all other business functions and customers. You will use your Manufacturing Engineering skill-set to bolster the clients Manufacturing team.

Responsibilities

  • Working with Head of Production to support bid activities on additional Programs
  • Producing ROM estimates and detailed costings re: new designs and product design changes
  • Estimating labour sequences and times for bids and change management
  • Working as part of an integrated team with major assembly suppliers during the development and production cycles of new programmes
  • Carrying out Manufacturing Readiness Level Assessments both on the clients supply chain and at system level - training to be provided
  • Working with the Supply Chain supporting Supplier selection initiatives, problem resolution and cost out initiatives
  • Supporting Client Design Engineering in order to ensure that DFM, DFT & DTC principles are implemented within the conceptual and final design phases
  • Generation/governance of Final Acceptance Test documentation ensuring all aspects are compliant with requirement specifications i.e. Vehicle Electronic Testing, Mobility Testing, Turret Testing etc.
  • Assist with the development of an optimised production line using line balancing/buffer sizing and Kanban setting/replenishment strategy
  • Drive LEAN initiatives throughout Manufacturing and Factory Acceptance Testing, with a bias on process improvements utilising Lean tools/principles (ie line balancing/buffer sizing and Kanbans) where appropriate
  • Advise and assist and promote the investigation of new manufacturing technologies
  • Executing an effective Technology Transfer process

Education/Experience

Particular Skills Required

  • Proven experience working on full program bids with Manufacturing Assembly and Test processes (Armoured Fighting Vehicle experience preferred)
  • Working experience of welded structures for wheeled/tracked vehicles (armour preferable)
  • Experience of low volume & high value (vehicle or similar) production
  • Knowledge and procurement of tooling and facilitation activities required for manufacturing large high value / low volume products
  • A working understanding of two & three dimensional CAD tools is essential
  • Significant experience/background in a Process/Manufacturing Engineering role
  • Good working knowledge of MRP systems including:
    • MBOM creation and maintenance
    • Change control and change introduction
  • Excellent communications & interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in leading Route Cause Analysis investigations
  • Strong knowledge of Spreadsheets, Word, Databases and PowerPoint
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Prepared to work for appropriate periods at various GDUK & other designated sites (includes overseas)
  • Attention to Detail
  • Technical authorship

Education and Experience

  • The job holder should possess a Degree, HNC or equivalent (vocational experience) in Manufacturing Engineering and or Production testing
  • Proven experience as a Manufacturing Engineer covering Mechanical/Electrical assemblies
  • Have experience working within a bids environment
  • A good knowledge of MRP principles
  • Participation in 'Lean Process' initiatives
  • There should be a strong bias / understanding towards Manufacturing & processing techniques
  • Ability to train staff at all levels
