Marine Systems Principal Engineer (Technical Authority)


"The MSSP Systems Technical Authority (STA) is responsible for ensuring the safety and performance of the T45 and QE Class Marine Systems to deliver the required capability and availability while remaining safe to operate, as delegated by the Systems Approving Authority.
This is achieved through:
  • The proactive management of Systems and Equipment design intent and the underpinning hazard, maintenance, documentation, configuration and Systems Design Baseline management
  • The timely provision of authoritative advice and recommendations to key stakeholders to safely manage deviation from the expected performance, material state or operational use
  • Providing proactive and supportive TA services to the MSSP Customer, working collaboratively with other stakeholders"
The STA has four Chief Engineers, each with responsibility for defined Systems & Equipment: Lot 1 - Power & Propulsion Systems, Lot 2 - Environmental, Domestics & Habitability Systems, Lot 3 - Platform Systems and Lot 4 - Mechanical & Constructive Systems
Each Lot Chief Engineer leads their Systems engineering team, including engineering leads for the Key Support Partners, in supporting their in-scope Systems and Equipment and establishing relationships with the key stakeholders
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Principal Engineer is responsible for ensuring a through life perspective is taken to the management of their in-scope Systems and Equipment, providing authoritative advice and making recommendations for Systems and Equipment as delegated by the Chief Engineer


To the relevant Chief Engineer, for delivery of technical services, application of engineering governance and the management of records
To the Systems & Equipment Approving Authorities (SAA and EAA) and Warship Technical Authority (WTA) for external engineering governance.

Principal Tasks & Responsibilities

Provide proactive and supportive TA services to the MSSP Customer within delegated authority, working collaboratively with other stakeholders.
Sponsor the TA requirements for design intent maintainance and update, including but not limited to safety case, hazard, design baseline, obsolescence, maintenance and technical documentation management, performance improvement and design change.
In liaison with the Lot Programme Manager and Technical Services team, develop plans for the through life maintainance and update of Systems & Equipment design intent.
Provide authoritative TA input to the processes for remedial / change activity to design, operation, training etc, to maintain and improve capable, available and safe to operate platform systems, liaising with SAAs, EAAs and Equipment Technical Authorities (ETAs) and providing guidance to the Technical Services team as required.
Provide direction and guidance to STA Senior Engineers and the Technical Services team where their outputs are within the scope of the post holders allocated Systems and Equipment responsibilities.
Lead the concession investigation, management and decision making processes, issuing concession advice within delegated authority and developing concession proposals for approval where outside delegated authority.
Lead the provision of timely and accurate response to technical queries to the customer, issuing advice within delegated authority and developing proposed responses for approval where outside delegated authority.
Manage the provision of timely and accurate provision of safety case reports and certificates of clearance for use, approving outputs where within delegated authority and the making recommendation for approval if outside delegated authority.
Provide proactive advice & recommendations to manage Systems & Equipment safety, performance, maintenance, defects, obsolescence & configuration within delegated authority.
To provide support to the Chief Engineer as directed.
Apply and adhere to the appropriate engineering, environmental & safety standards, policies and processes, supporting the development of STA policies and processes.
Work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
Act as a mentor for junior engineering staff and engage with line management for personal development of the engineering cadre
Promote an effective, collaborative STA, integrating Key Support Partners and fostering a team approach.
Exercise a duty of care for health and safety to all.


To the Systems & Equipment Approving Authorities (SAAs and EAAs), Warship Technical Authorities (WTAs) and Equipment Technical Authorities (ETAs) for delivering principal tasks and responsibilities.
Engagement across the Team Assure organisation and Key Support Partners to assist in maintaining Systems and Equipment design and performance analysis baselines.
Engagement across the Team Assure organisation and Key Support Partners to enable delivery of MSSP outputs.
The Technical Services Technical Support Manager (Bristol) for the employment of Technical Services engineers in support of STA activity.

Qualifications and Experience
Degree qualified and a Chartered Engineer or having demonstrable equivalent experience.
Significant experience of engineering design or support for complex Naval systems or equipment.
Experience in managing an engineering team.
Proven competence in the engineering management of systems and transversals.
A proven ability to work in a collaborative manner across a multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders

Security Information

Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.
The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
