Job Purpose:

Provide leadership, guidance and direction in the provision of Health, Safety and Environment in the Business Unit, ensuring the application of 'best practice' and the development of a positive Health & Safety culture throughout the workforce. The main challenges in this role are:
  • influencing a variety of operational managers to establish understanding, ownership and accountability for HSE within the work environment

  • Integration of differing Health & Safety cultures across the Business Unit which includes the UK based and overseas contracts.

Key outputs/deliverables will be:

Main Accountabilities:

  • Proactively engage with Management teams at all levels of the Business Unit to ensure ownership and accountability for HSE improvement
  • Provide expert advice and direction to the Business Unit on current and future Health, Safety& Environmental legislation, guidance and practices to ensure continual improvement in the development of the Business Unit's Health, Safety & Environment Management
  • Continually review risk registers, policies and procedures to ensure successful control of Health, Safety & Environmental risks
  • Prepare, monitor and analyse statistical data on Health, Safety and Environmental trends, identifying corrective actions as required
  • Develop relationships with external HSE bodies to ensure a collaborative working environment
  • Proactively engage with all managers to develop and influence a positive Health & Safety culture within the Business unit through effective improvement activities
  • To direct and support Quality and Assurance activities across the Business Unit, enabling it to deliver its strategy and targets, to improve its operational efficiency and performance, and ensure compliance with the contracts, the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.
  • Provide regular reports, information and support to the Land Sector HSE Director
  • Actively engage with all Land Sector Business Unit Heads of HSE to share learning and best practice
  • Ensure that all accidents and near miss events are promptly and thoroughly investigated, lessons learnt are shared and that accurate reports are completed and all relevant information entered into the AIRSWEB reporting system

Additional accountabilities:

  • Ensure the delivery of effective communication of HSE objectives to the operational team
  • Ensure that regular audits, inspections and safety tours take place within the required standards and provide guidance on corrective actions where appropriate
  • In coordination with the Senior Management, prepare plans and budgets for training and awareness requirements for Health & Safety
  • Lead the Business Unit Health & Safety Operational team, ensuring that they continually provide competent advice, guidance and support to operational management to ensure improvements in Health & Safety culture and minimise the risk of an accident or injury occurring
  • Provide direction to first-line reports and manage performance to ensure satisfactory performance through conducting 1-2-1, setting objectives and annual Performance Development Reviews
  • Develop and implement KPI's for team and monitor success on a regular basis, identifying corrective actions as necessary

Person Specification

Knowledge, Qualification and Experience:

  • Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management (NEBOSH or BSC)
  • Level 3 qualification in Environmental Management and Assessment
  • Chartered Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety or other appropriate discipline
  • Experience of proactively engaging with Senior, Contract and Site management to improve HSE
  • Extensive experience of delivering a high standard of compliance and exceptional health and safety statistics
  • Candidates must have a proven track record of imbedding H&S Behavioral change in relation to a safety culture
  • Multi-Site HSE experience both UK & overseas.
