  • Carrying out processing operations on all Product and related Support Equipment within the required work areas
  • Carrying out handling operations within the required buildings and at the waterfront Jetty during active states
  • Working in accordance with all relevant Security, Safety, Efficiency and Quality regulations

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensuring that all processing and handling operations are completed within programme restrictions and to approved operating procedures, safety cases and legislative requirements
  • Identify any areas of concern or serious shortcomings which affect SWS operations to Line Manager
  • Ensure adherence to the regulations laid down in Coulport Procedural Guides, Work Instructions, SWS Procedural Guides and Safe Systems of work relevant to the work area
  • Comply with all safety, environmental, fire, quality, security standards, regulations and legislation and highlight non-compliance to Line Manager
  • Undertake the duties of any other craft operators, appropriate to the grade, in any SWS work area as required/directed
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health security and quality and be a great team player


Key Responsibilities

  • Performs all processing and handling operations within the required work area as necessary to meet depot outputs
  • During all processing activities the post holder will perform the duties of either:
  • the reader who controls the process being undertaken and ensures no deviation from approved procedures
  • or the first operator who undertakes the operations required to accomplish the process
  • or the second operator who assists the first operator and musters and prepares tools, equipment and materials required for the process

  • Performs x-ray processing, inspection and maintenance operations
  • Perform pack/unpack operations, utilising appropriate lifting equipment, test equipment and extraction equipment
  • Perform loading and unloading of trailers, using appropriate lifting and crane equipment
  • Perform crane/slinger duties
  • To perform the control and operation of Police TMR keys within the TSA
  • To conduct Service Unit Operations to support the programme as required and to ensure sufficient SQEP is maintained if selected to support the Service Unit
  • To conduct Service Unit operations on the EHJ as necessary to support SSBN operational programme within a mixed manning team (RN/Industrial/Non-Industrial)
  • To carry out equipment modifications, when required in accordance with approved modification packages
  • To perform Facility Maintenance tasks as required
  • To attend all periodic mandatory and on-the-job training, as directed
  • Individuals may be expected to undertake tasks in support of other teams and undertake any other duties deemed to be within the job holder's capability and grade
  • Responsible for undertaking other duties as required from time to time by line and task management

Essential Experience

  • Experienced mechanical fitter or electrician
  • Previous experience of working and adhering to company procedures
  • Experience of working and adhering to legislative procedures
  • Working in a manufacturing or processing environment is essential
  • Previous experience of using cranes is preferable however must be willing and able to undertake training and certification


Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience of working within a Ministry of Defence work environment is preferable
  • Working knowledge of SWS Programme and working in a Nuclear or Weapons environment
  • Knowledge of working on a restricted site or in a secure environment
  • Awareness of Nuclear Site Authorisation Conditions and managements systems
  • Basic knowledge of working in a radiological environment

  • Recognised craft apprenticeship (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent (SVQ level 3, ONC, Modern Apprenticeship, City& Guilds)
  • Willing and able to obtain the necessary Security Clearance for the post
  • Willing and able to work within Radiological and Explosive areas
  • Willing and able to undertake all necessary training required for the post
