To maintain and secure the provision of AWE's Firewalls, External email and Webmail systems. To assist in Network related Project work as requested

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • To support the Networks Technical Service Manager (TSM) in maintaining the operational status of, and maximising availability of, the Data and Voice communications infrastructure
  • Escalation of significant network issues to the Networks TSM
  • Ensuring services are maintained and up to date
  • Resolving any loss of service due to hardware or software issues
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in Environment, Safety, Health, Security and Quality
  • Develop the right culture, and encourage continuous improvement
  • Support other members of AWE Community in delivering AWE's goals
  • Support the implementation of Mission, Vision and Business Strategy
  • Working closely with other team areas to deploy IT services through the development of effective processes, key performance indicators and problem management
  • Diagnosing and following through to resolution any problems, escalating to team members or other teams and vendors when required
  • To maintain technical skills to allow us to benefit from new and emerging technologies in order to make supportive decisions
  • Understand and support system road maps
  • Undertake tasks assigned by TSM

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working in a challenging and secure environment
  • Experience of implementing, configuring and troubleshooting JUNIPER equipment, VLAN's, trunk and access ports and port sharing /port channels/aggregated Ethernet links
  • Experience of implementing network security (dot1x, port security and network access controls) is essential
  • Knowledge of encrypted WAN links
  • Experience of working with various network monitoring tools, Netsight, Spectrum, Solarwinds would be advantageous
  • Experience of working with and implementing Data Centre Network designs and working within virtualised environments
  • Good knowledge of how to configure multi-vendor Firewall solutions
  • Knowledge of webmail and external email configuration and controls
  • Good communicator (written and oral) with sound facilitation skills that can be related to colleagues of all levels
  • Ability to operate under pressure and influence decisions
  • Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to working with varying network equipment
  • Technical investigation and problem solving skills
  • Experience of producing high quality documentation and operational documents to support current and new network architecture


  • JUNIPER Certification extremely advantageous
  • Minimum 4 GCSE's or equivalent at grade C or above including Maths and English
  • Degree in IS/IT or ONC/HNC in an IS/IT related subject, or relevant equivalent experience

  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance necessary for the role
  • Willing and able to undertake flexible working arrangements
  • Willing and able to travel within the UK and abroad as necessary
