As the science, engineering and technology arm of the Ministry of Defence, Dstl plays an essential role in developing complex weapon evaluation capabilities with a view to achieving: 

• Delivery of the war-fighter into and out of the conflict, 
• Protection of the war fighter and the platform, 
• Provision of the weaponry to conduct the mission, 
• Test, measurement and evaluation of military systems. 

This job opportunity is to join the Threat Evaluation Group within Platform Systems Division. The successful candidate will provide support to the Team’s threat assessment capability and conduct weapon technology research. They will support a range of internal and external customers providing scientific and analytical advice to Ministry of Defence commands. 

This is a diverse role that covers all aspects of the practical evaluation of weapon systems including electro-optic and radar guided missiles. The skills required are broad and include: 

• Aerospace engineering 
• Experience in mathematical modelling and data processing (using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink and LabVIEW) 
• Understanding and knowledge of guided weapon technologies 
• Knowledge of guided weapon sub-systems design and development 
• Fast jet & unmanned aerial vehicle avionics 
• Analogue and digital electronics 
• Data logging and hardware in the loop testing 
• Radar and Electro-optic target sensing technology

Working Conditions 

The normal working environment will be office based at Dstl Porton Down. 

There is a possible requirement for travel within the UK (to engage with industry, stakeholders, customers and suppliers) and internationally (to engage with partners on project related issues). 

Participation in trials may also be a requirement, which will be dependent on passing a trials medical. 

Security Clearance Required 

Given the very sensitive nature of the work, this role requires Developed Vetting and we can only recruit UK Nationals who have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.

Technical/Professional Experience: 

These roles are being offered at a range of levels and the level offered will depend on the applicant’s relevant experience and qualifications. 

Applicants who have recently graduated are welcome to apply as well as more experienced individuals.
