Lead Software Engineer - Permanent - Somerset - £44,000 + Benefits

The Lead Developer will undertake fundamental tasks such as software development and service management and will need to work to development standards, policies, and practices and procedures. The successful Lead Developer will be a positive influence within the team to achieve best results.

Main Purpose of Role:

  • To work in consort with the Software Development Team to ensure that our client's standards, principles and policies are maintained and adhered to as well as ensuring adherence to standards of best practice (e.g. source code control etc.)
  • The post holder would mentor the other technical staff, including trainees, and transfer knowledge and experience to Lead Developers outside the team as well as provide assurance on 3rd party developments
  • Additionally the post holder would be expected to contribute, alongside other development peers with the Software Development group, in setting and raising the standards of development within our client

Key Responsibilities;

  • Accountable for the quality of deliverables from one or more software development teams (source code quality, automated testing, design quality, documentation etc.)
  • Accountable for one or more development teams following our client's standard processes (code reviews, unit testing, ALM processes, source code management etc.) and following our technology baseline
  • Hands on development in .Net or Java
  • Responsible for staying up to date with software development best practice and influencing future standard practices

Essential Experience:

  • Establishing and running a high performing team (e.g. delivering to project timescales, meeting SLAs) in a development environment, including line management
  • Negotiating and interpersonal skills, with commercial awareness/experience of managing contractors or 3rd parties
  • The practical application of a recognised agile methodology (e.g. Scrum)
  • The practical application of test-driven development and continuous integration
  • Experience of providing quality / technical assurance within complex development projects, on a variety of application architectures using Microsoft platforms and languages
  • The application of a number of the following technologies:
    • Data layer:
      • Schema design
      • SQL, T-SQL
      • Object-relational mapping (e.g. Entity Framework)
    • Application layer (business logic, integration, workflow, reporting, authentication)
      • C# .NET 4.0 or later
      • Business process management, particularly based on Workflow Foundation, for example K2
      • WS-*, RESTful, WCF web services
      • Kerberos, Active Directory
      • Application security risks and best practices
    • User Interface layer
      • ASP.NET MVC and Web Forms, HTML, JavaScript
      • WPF, WinForms
    • Data transfer and manipulation
      • XML; XSLT, XPath, XQuery
    • Test-driven development
      • Unit testing and unit test tools
      • Automated test tools and methods
    • Build and deployment tools and environments e.g.
      • Team Foundation Server
      • Microsoft Release Management
      • PowerShell
