Senior Software Engineer - Permanent - Somerset - £30,000 - £34,000

This is an exciting opportunity to join our client's Application Lifecycle Management team which is responsible for helping to implement DevOps practices in agile feature development teams across all areas of our client's business. As a software engineer specialising in Application Lifecycle Management you will be working with the latest technologies from Microsoft and other vendors in what is fast becoming one of the most crucial components of the software delivery lifecycle.

Key Objectives:

  • Assist with the day-to-day management of Team Foundation Server 2015 and Visual Studio Team Services
  • Work with feature development teams to implement continuous integration and continuous delivery using PowerShell and the Release Management capabilities of TFS and VSTS
  • Help to design and implement solutions that use Microsoft Azure as part of the continuous delivery pipeline
  • Play an active role in our quest to implement infrastructure as code

Main Purpose of Role:

The post holder will be working in new areas of work so unique problems may be encountered which they will be expected to solve largely by themselves. The post holder will work within the Application Lifecycle Management team and be expected to:

  • Design and build complex software which meets strict security guidelines
  • Provide estimates for large pieces of work at different stages of a project lifecycle, including when the requirements or solution are not fully understood
  • Acquire an understanding of a problem or situation by analysing it systematically, taking a logical, analytical approach to problem solving and paying close attention to detail
  • Sometimes work in a self-organising Scrum team, reflecting on work processes and leading their improvement
  • Operate within a largely unsupervised environment
  • Be familiar with, use effectively and select appropriately from applicable methods, procedures and standards, ensuring that others do the same
  • Be able to work effectively, productively and meet time and quality targets across tasks within scope using available tools, methodologies and/or equipment with reference to others only by exception
  • Keep overall objectives and strategies in mind, and not being deflected from these when dealing with matters of detail
  • Understand how the specific role relates to the usage of IT within the Technology Division, to its customers and to our client as a whole
  • Have regular contact with internal customers when conducting support activities,
  • Give regular briefings to Technology Division management and the customer on progress made with work in hand
  • Communicate progress, risks and problems to other project stakeholders such as project managers, scrum masters and product owners when working on project activities
  • Mentor more junior members of the team

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and build solutions using agreed standards and tools, sometimes acting as the most senior developer in a small team. This includes influencing other developers to use appropriate technologies and follow processes
  • Document all work in accordance with agreed standards
  • Conduct reviews of specifications, product backlogs etc. in order to provide feedback on technical issues and create work estimates
  • Take an active role in software development events, such as daily scrums, scrum sprint plans, service review etc. Exemplify appropriate behaviour for a Scrum developer, influencing others to do the same
  • Lead evaluations and reviews of programming methods, tools and standards
  • Continually develop own skills as part of a programme of professional development and mentor others
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager

Essential Experience:

  • Evidence of up to date professional development practices
  • Evidence of an interest in development technologies, and a track record of continuous personal improvement
  • Good logical reasoning and ability to resolve complex problems
