What jobs can you do at MI5?

Published on: 8 May 2023

Originally founded to combat German espionage in the First World War, MI5 is one of the UK’s leading intelligence agencies. The organisation employs more than 4,400 people in various security cleared roles, from recent university graduates enrolled in development programmes to senior intelligence officers.

Many jobseekers underestimate the variety of positions available within MI5, many of which can be good jobs for veterans in the UK. Despite being an intelligence agency, there’s much more going on behind the scenes than investigations. So, what are the different jobs you could apply for at MI5?

MI5 claims investigations are “at the heart” of the agency. Professionals working within intelligence are tasked with responding to emerging threats and determining strategies for how to investigate a person or group. These experts work closely with people in front-line collection jobs, like surveillance officers and language analysts, as well as other agencies to disrupt threats.

In this field, you could also be working in various roles at the forefront of intelligence gathering. This might require speaking a particular language or having specific technical aptitudes. Job titles include agent handlers, surveillance officers and covert technical operations specialists.

It’s often overlooked that MI5 invests heavily in technology. With industry-leading corporate and operational technology sections, there are lots of great job opportunities for security cleared professionals looking to work within tech at the agency.

As one of the UK’s largest government agencies, MI5 must stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and the rapid increase in cyber threats. As such, it’s constantly on the lookout for talented experts to join the ranks. From software engineering to cyber crime analysts, there is a plethora of career options here.

For linguists with the ability to gain security clearances, working at MI5 could be the perfect next step in your career. The agency consistently brings in people who can speak, understand and listen to a wide range of languages and dialects such as Russian, Mandarin and Arabic.

As a language analyst with MI5, you can expect to listen to and analyse a wide variety of audio material to support ongoing investigations. You’ll be responsible for providing expert insight into not just the language, but also a country’s culture, history and political landscape.

MI5 recruits specialists across every area of the organisation. The corporate side requires experienced legal representatives, whilst solution architects could be enlisted to support the technical side of operations. The majority of these roles demand significant experience, such as a speech technologist or an occupational psychologist.
