Prince Harry to relinquish military appointments

Published on: 21 Jan 2020

Prince Harry will relinquish his three military titles as part of a deal made with Buckingham Palace that will allow him to step away from royal duties.

From this spring, the Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan will stop using the title HRH and Prince Harry will no longer be Captain General Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington or Commodore-in-Chief of Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command.

He had been commissioned to military life in 2006 and completed two operational tours of Afghanistan during his time in the army.

As a result of the changes, Prince Harry will not be able to wear his military uniform, even at public events such as Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph, as per rules governing all retired service personnel.

A statement from the couple suggested he had hoped to continue his role in the armed forces, but recognised this would not be possible.

It is not yet known who will take on the prestigious role of Captain General Royal Marines.
