New anti-terror laws coming 'within weeks'

Published on: 21 Jan 2020

The government has said it is bringing in new laws designed to combat terrorism as part of a bill to be brought before parliament by mid-March.

Home secretary Priti Patel said terror offenders will soon face a minimum jail term of 14 years, while automatic early release would be scrapped.

The news comes after the terror attack on London Bridge in November last year, when a known offender stabbed two members of the public to death. He had been released in 2018, halfway through a 16-year prison sentence.

Justice secretary Robert Buckland said: "Terrorists pose a great risk to our society and our way of life, which is why we must bring them to justice and keep the public safe."

The government has also said it will be doubling the number of counter-terrorism probation officers it employs, as well as increasing police funding by £90 million next year to combat the threat.

Meanwhile, a review is to be launched into how the police investigate, monitor and manage terror offenders.
