Gavin Williamson replaces disgraced Sir Michael Fallon as defence secretary

Chief whip Gavin Williamson has been appointed defence secretary after Sir Michael Fallon quit the position following allegations of sexual harassment.

The appointment of 41-year-old Mr Williamson, who is MP for South Staffordshire, was announced within hours of Sir Michael’s resignation.

In a statement, Mr Williamson said he was “both honoured and excited” by the promotion and that he has always admired “the professionalism and valour of all those who serve in our country’s armed forces”.

He went on to acknowledge the rising threats and worsening international security situation facing the UK.

“[This makes] defence’s work all the more important,” Mr Williamson wrote. “It is imperative that we continue to take the fight to Daesh and keep Britain safe.”

He concluded: “I am determined to ensure that the Armed Forces receive the recognition they deserve for the great work they do, including through the Armed Forces Covenant, and that they evolve both to meet the changing threats that we face, and to ensure that they properly represent the modern society that they defend."

Sir Michael’s resignation was the first to materialise in light of recently revealed sexual harassment claims shadowing Parliament.
