Defence secretary Gavin Williamson sacked

Published on: 20 May 2019

Defence secretary Gavin Williamson has been relieved of his position, it was revealed last night (May 1st 2019).

The decision by prime minister Theresa May came in the wake of top-level security discussions concerning Chinese telecoms giant Huawei being leaked to the press from a National Security Council meeting.

A report in the Daily Telegraph detailed the decision to agree to let Huawei participate in some aspects of the UK's new wireless communications network, and it is alleged that Mr Williamson was the source of the unauthorised disclosure.

A statement from Downing Street said: "The prime minister has this evening asked Gavin Williamson to leave the government, having lost confidence in his ability to serve in the role of defence secretary and as a member of her cabinet."

Penny Mordaunt has been appointed in his place, making her the first woman in the office.

Mr Williamson has vehemently denied the allegations against him and insists the leak must have come from elsewhere.
