Contractors chosen for Barrow submarine work

BAE Systems has selected Costain, Shepherd and Morgan Sindall for a £300 million redevelopment of its Barrow-in-Furness submarine site.

The eight-year programme will transform the site in preparation for the delivery of a replacement for the Royal Navy's Vanguard class submarines. Around 850 contractors are set to be hired at project peak, with many in security cleared positions.

Work on the most significant redevelopment of the site since the 1980s will involve the construction of new buildings and the refurbishment of existing facilities.

Under the framework contracts, the three companies are to compete with each other on a mini-tender basis to complete the design and build of the individual projects that make up the overall programme.

Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems Submarines, said: "We are delighted to have three companies of the calibre and track-record of Costain, Shepherd and Morgan Sindall working alongside us to deliver this major programme."
