Army deployed to help flood-hit communities

Published on: 21 Feb 2020

Troops from the British Army have been deployed in parts of Yorkshire to help communities with flooding in the aftermath of Storm Dennis.

Showing the wide variety of jobs the armed forces may be called to, soldiers from the 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland and 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment have been assisting the Environment Agency in erecting flood barriers and defences.

Homes and businesses in the Calder Valley in particular have been struggling with rising water levels as Storm Dennis brought torrential rain just a week after the issues caused by Storm Ciara.

Communities across the UK are facing further chaos this week, with more than 300 flood warnings in place and five severe warnings representing a danger to life. A major incident was declared in Wales yesterday (February 16th 2020) as landslides occurred and roads were declared impassable.

Defence secretary Ben Wallace said: "Our armed forces are always ready to support local authorities and communities whenever they need it. The government won't hesitate to use all means at its disposal to mitigate the effects of Storm Dennis."
