Nuclear power station demolition programme underway

Posted - 24/01/2012 Nuclear power station demolition programme underway

Magnox's planned series of demolition work across its nuclear power plant portfolio is underway, which could result in counter terrorist check (CTC) cleared jobs being created.

The £600,000 first project in its £304 million programme will see Erith demolish main site offices, a canteen and smaller supplementary buildings like the boron dust building and flocculation tanks at the Dungeness A site in Kent.

Another five contractors have also been appointed to this framework contract, with further projects such as the deplanting of a boiler house at Bradwell and the removal of asbestos from a boiler house in Dungeness set to be awarded shortly, Construction Enquirer has reported.

Dr Peter Walkden, Magnox's commercial director, commented: "It's very satisfying to see the response we had to the framework competition and we now believe we have an excellent set of contractors to work with to ensure our projects are safely delivered."

Earlier this month it was announced that a new construction skills centre is to be built at the Lakes College in West Cumbria, which once completed will take on around 280 trainees per year, preparing many of them for CTC cleared positions in the nuclear sector.
