We are seeking skilled and enthusiastic IT professionals to join our diverse and experienced Technical Consulting practice, which aids our customers in solving complex business problems; meeting their business needs with solutions which are appropriate to their business strategy and that have a significant technology or information systems component.

Technical Consultants help clients create a technology strategy; to define the technology principles, processes, architecture and assurance to run their business; to 'know your estate' and to audit and manage it; to help client teams build and operate products, and to learn and use the cloud.

We build client intimacy and trust; we influence our clients up to the highest levels; we build corporate insight into our client problems; we identify opportunities for innovative solutions.

Common responsibilities

Depending on role/assignment, Technical Consultant have a variety of responsibilities which can include:

  • Developing evidence-based strategies, approaches, options analyses and product assessments for customers with technology or information-centric challenges, advising and supporting them throughout the organisation up to board level.
  • Applying rigorous architectural and systems engineering method to help customers commission and control significant change programmes, realise anticipated outcomes and benefits and manage the complexity, uncertainty and risk.
  • Establishing technical, architectural and engineering governance for customer organisations as needed to meet their business goals (such as establishing an effective ‘Design Authority’ or ‘Integration, Verification and Validation’ function for a customer; or defining appropriate technical principles, policies and standards).
  • Translating client business requirements into specific systems, applications or processes with large and/or complex architectures and development of approaches to ensure coherence and successful integration during implementation.
  • Representing the customer when interfacing with external stakeholders or suppliers (e.g. when operating as a client-side design authority).
  • Advising customers regarding the opportunities and threats to their business from emerging and disruptive technologies and trends, by combining expertise in those technologies and trends (e.g. cloud technology) with a deep understanding of the customer’s business goals and strategies and the business context in which they operate.
  • Helping customers to define strategies to rationalise their application estate.
  • Applying thought leadership, systems thinking and other techniques to help customers in the formulation and implementation of their strategy.
  • Developing and manage relationships with customers.
  • Leading customer-side teams, often a mixture of staff from the customer/BAE Systems/other suppliers, covering systems engineering, technical analysis, business analysis etc whilst also acting as a bridge to other customer and BAE Systems teams.

Skills and experience required

BAE Systems expects technical consultants to ideally have:

  • Experience in undertaking some or all of the responsibilities listed above.
  • Experience in one or more of the following capabilities: Systems Engineering Governance/Design Authority, Enterprise Architecture, Technology Strategy or DevOps/Agile Advisory.
  • Experience leading teams/projects to successful outcomes.
  • Experience in client facing roles or engagements.
  • Experience of large, challenging and/or complex problem areas/projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • The ability to prioritise workload, work well under pressure and concurrently manage customer and BAE Systems expectations
