New Army boss taking office in June

Published on: 16 May 2018

Lieutenant general Mark Carleton-Smith will lead the Army from June after his appointment as the new chief of the general staff was approved by Her Majesty the Queen.

He will replace general Sir Nick Carter who is taking up the post of chief of the defence staff, succeeding air chief marshall Sir Stuart Peach who has become chairman of the military committee at NATO.

Announcing the confirmation, defence secretary Gavin Williamson congratulated lieutenant general Carleton-Smith on his appointment.

“[He] has played a leading role in many of our recent operations at home and abroad, including our campaign to defeat Daesh in Iraq and Syria, our support to British Overseas Territories affected by Hurricane Irma and the military’s support to areas badly affected by the snow earlier this year,” he commented.

Mr Williamson added that lieutenant general Carleton-Smith will be an outstanding leader of the Army as the Ministry of Defence looks to strengthen and further modernise the Army in the face of intensifying threats.
